Overview

A short, beautiful run south into New South Wales to Byron Bay — lighthouse, beaches and a hinterland village, all door-to-door from the Gold Coast.

Best for: Beach lovers, day-trippers

Where you'll go

Your driver adapts the route on the day — stops can flex to suit your pace and interests.

  1. 1

    Gold Coast pickup

Scenic coastal run across the border.

    About this stop

Byron Bay lies about an hour south of the Gold Coast across the New South Wales border, reached via the Pacific Motorway through the green Tweed Valley, with the spire of Wollumbin (Mount Warning) often in view. In daylight-saving months NSW runs an hour ahead of Queensland.

    Make the most of it

Cross the border early — Byron's parking and cafe queues build by mid-morning, and the lighthouse light is kindest before the heat. Your phone will jump an hour ahead in daylight-saving months, so let the driver keep the schedule honest.

    Why it's worth it

One of the great short coastal drives in the country — you leave a high-rise skyline and within the hour you're standing under a lighthouse at the continent's eastern tip.

  2. 2

    Cape Byron Lighthouse

The easterly tip with ocean lookouts.

    About this stop

Completed in 1901, Cape Byron Lighthouse crowns the most easterly point of the Australian mainland and ranks among the country's most powerful lights. The headland below is famous for year-round dolphins and for humpback whales passing on their winter–spring migration.

    Make the most of it

Drive up rather than walk if time is tight, then take the short stretch of the Cape Byron track down to the most-easterly-point marker — twenty minutes very well spent. Mornings bring calmer wind and better whale-spotting light in season, and the headland is exposed, so hats need a firm grip.

    Why it's worth it

Standing at the eastern edge of the continent with whales breaching below needs no filter — it is the day's defining moment.

  3. 3

    Byron town & beach

    Lunch, markets and beach time.

    About this stop

Byron Bay grew from a working port — dairy, timber, even whaling into the early 1960s — into the counterculture capital of the NSW North Coast, a turn sealed by the region's 1973 Aquarius Festival. Today its patrolled Main Beach, boutiques and cafe scene make it one of Australia's most visited small towns.

    Make the most of it

Eat first, swim second — the favourite cafes queue from noon. Main Beach is patrolled and family-friendly, and if you'd rather walk than swim, the beachfront path toward The Pass offers the best surf-watching in town. Ninety minutes covers lunch, a browse and sandy feet.

    Why it's worth it

Few places blend barefoot surf town and polished food scene this convincingly — Byron is the exhale in the middle of your day.

  4. 4

    Bangalow / return

A village stop on the way home.

    About this stop

Bangalow is a hinterland village ten minutes inland from Byron, its early-1900s weatherboard shopfronts now home to providores, galleries and boutiques. It sits in former Big Scrub country — once Australia's largest expanse of lowland subtropical rainforest.

    Make the most of it

Half an hour covers the main street — a coffee, a providore browse, a photo of the heritage verandahs — before you settle in for the run home. If the group is beach-tired, skipping it to bank extra time in Byron is a perfectly good call; just tell your driver before leaving town.

    Why it's worth it

The hinterland's quiet answer to Byron's beach buzz — verandahs, good coffee and one last unhurried half-hour before the border.
