Sydney New Year's Eve

Know before you go

What it is

Sydney New Year's Eve is run by the City of Sydney, with fireworks over Sydney Harbour at 9pm and midnight. There are 48 vantage points around the harbour: some free, some needing a free ticket and some paid.

  1. Arriving by car

In the 2026 plan, roads near the North Sydney vantage points close from 7pm on 30 December and major city closures start at midday on 31 December; city car parks can't be reached while roads are closed. The organiser says public transport is the only way to travel on the night, so get dropped at your hotel before midday.

  2. Getting home

In the 2026 plan, most city roads reopen by 4am on 1 January. The organiser suggests heading home after 1am to avoid the crowds; taxi ranks run 9pm–4am at Darling Harbour (Zollner Circuit) and in the city (Goulburn Street, Liverpool Street).

Good to knowFlying out early on 1 January? In the 2026 plan, Sydney Airport's train stations are closed from 12:30am to 4:30am, so book a car to the airport.
